Palo Alto, this year. A research laboratory has a problem it will not report: one of its safety researchers has spent five months becoming somebody nobody can talk to, and eleven hundred intelligent people are frightened of her and would rather not say so. Nate Cobb is hired because the alternative is a phone call the company cannot make. His wife has taken a fellowship at a policy center funded by the industry she is paid to criticize, and has raised the question of children for the first time in eleven years. The researcher is not unwell. She has simply been listened to, at length, for months, by the only thing at that company with the time.
