Cambridge, Massachusetts, this year. A university laboratory has built a system that conducts the clinical interview, and it is better than Nate Cobb at the one thing he has been paid for since 2010, which is noticing the sentence somebody starts and does not finish. A woman of sixty-four in a longitudinal study told it something she had told nobody in thirty-one years, and it did exactly what it was built to do, and she withdrew and complained — not that she was harmed, but that she did not choose. His wife has the appointment she has wanted since she was twenty-six. It is the first city in twenty years they are not leaving, and the marriage is at its worst.
