An island in the Bering Sea, this year. A monitoring station with eleven people on it has had a supervisor resign by radio in the middle of a winter block, and two of the remaining crew have not spoken to each other since October, and the operator cannot fly everybody out. Nate Cobb is contracted to assess the crew and is put on the rotation with them, which means that for the first time he cannot leave the population he is assessing. There is no bandwidth and no room anywhere for a thing not to be said. His sister said nine words about their mother in April. And in the dark he says four names out loud to a twenty-four-year-old who has never heard any of them.
