Chang'an, 755. In the money row stands the safest place in the West Market: a deposit shop founded by a man's grandfather with a table and a strongbox, which has not lost anybody's money in a hundred and forty years. Chang Nine's mother has used it for forty of them. So has a lay society with two hundred subscribers, and a singer who has been saving to buy out her indenture for seven years. Then the revenue offices publish a measure against bad coin. It is sensible, arguably overdue, and every official involved is acting in good faith. There is a queue by evening, and in four days there is a run, and then there are doors.
