Chang'an, 752. Tea has been drunk in the north for about eleven years and nobody knows yet what it is worth. Chang Nine is a licensed thief-catcher who works out of a market tower, is paid badly and late, and writes his cases up afterward because he has no other format. A pushy provincial walks into his mother's wine-shop with a contract in the handwriting of Chang Nine's dead brother, and five nights later is dead in a lane with his purse untouched and his sleeve cut open. The paper points three thousand li south, to a mountain nobody in the capital has heard of and two clients who both want him to stop looking for different reasons.
