Vienna, February 1938. Maximilian Attems is seventy-seven, has one room of what used to be a flat, and teaches drawing badly to four girls on Tuesdays. Sixty people a day come up his stairs because he knows people, which is true, and because he can do something, which is mostly not. He can obtain four sets of papers and is certain of the number, and he writes four names on the back of an envelope. A courteous man in the ninth district has a cabinet with four drawers in it, cross-referenced, maintained since 1919, and wants a picture Attems painted in 1913 because it places four people in a room together. He has twenty-six days.
