Vienna, 1919. The empire has been abolished, the office Maximilian Attems killed for was closed in April by a decree of four lines, and his title is now an offence. He is fifty-eight, sells one of his own pictures a month to men who used to sit for him, and has four left that he owns. Six thousand two hundred men in ash-gray shirts are being fed, shod and paid out of a hall in the Prater by a movement that has booked another hall, for nine thousand, for the eleventh of February. Its leader is not a mesmerist and not a charlatan. He is forty, is serious, and has an argument that nobody in the book is able to answer.
