Cairo, 1930. Marcelle Chédid's family have been in Egypt four generations and their papers fell between categories when the Ottoman Empire ended; the nationality she is applying for is granted at somebody's discretion and the application is going badly. An Egyptian husband would settle it. Yehia Darwish has a printing license, a plan to make Arabic schoolbooks at a price the state will buy, and no capital. In October they sit at a table and negotiate a marriage in French, with clauses, and each states exactly what he and she is getting, and the document is signed and witnessed. Neither pretends it is anything else. What happens to them afterward is what the book is.
