Read it:
Cairo, 1924. Wagida Zohdi has been in mourning for five years for a husband she was married to for six weeks, and the gray is not grief: it is the only costume that lets a woman of thirty keep a professional practice and refuse four hundred invitations without ever being asked why. Rashid Abu Zeid arrives from Gharbiya with an exercise book and a drainage scheme, needing somebody who can read a government estimate and count a Chamber. He pays her a fee, writes in her hand, and asks her, in the street, why she wears gray — and then says, without heat, that it is not the reason she has given.
