Read it:
Cairo, 1923. Nevine Mahran is twenty-four, publishes under her own name, and cannot find a newspaper in the city that will print her. Sherif Zohdi owns one, needs the revenue, and has a society column he cannot kill because it pays the wages of the political pages he believes in. She buys a full page every Wednesday; he charges her half rate and will not say why. What neither of them says is worth more: a paragraph he was paid to print in September, and a school in Bulaq that has been funded for two years by a man nobody has named. Cairo assembles the rest out of chauffeurs, maids and hostesses with grudges.
