Iceland, 999. Mýra pours ale at a trading post on the west coast and is a freedwoman who cannot bring a suit in her own name. Two summers ago she proved that this district's chieftain had killed a woman, and a court imposed nine years of man-price on him — and the district's whole surplus has gone east to pay it ever since, and there is nobody left here to be afraid of. In May a man says nine words at a feast about a dead woman he never met, and a boy of sixteen hits him once, and he dies of it. The law then works correctly at every step, the compensation is more than a district can raise, and the boy has until September to leave the country.
