Iceland, the winter of 997. Since the dead won legal standing six years ago, a draugr may hold land, bring suits, and be owed compensation like anybody else. Last June a goði named Bersi Grímsson killed a woman for the price of two cows and was made to pay for it by a man in a mound; in November he convenes a door-court to have that man removed from the district, lawfully, on his own ground. He sets it for the fifteenth of December, which has two hours and fifty-eight minutes of daylight, because a court sits from sunrise to sunset and a defense that will not fit fails. The only person who owes the dead man anything cannot be a party to anything, and has been afraid of the dark since midsummer.
