The Atacama, 2027. A dead man's proceeding is served on the family at his own wake, and the fifteen percent he owned passes to a twenty-six-year-old process engineer who is an Arancibia as well as a Larrechea. Beatriz Larrechea still owns the water on which a copper mine, a lithium plant and a valley all depend, and still holds the vote over shares she does not own. Then a lease executed in 2009 and never acted on is lodged with the water registry, and the register is amended, and the family loses its majority on the channel. Six hundred and forty people now decide a two-billion-dollar transaction in a schoolroom.
