São Paulo, 2025. Marina Bulhões Arantes has spent fourteen years building a woman nobody in the Jardins can place, and the man she killed in 2011 is under the community garden she runs in the far east zone. In July his daughter — who now runs that garden, and who is her friend — sits down at her kitchen table and says she has worked out where he is. By December her mother-in-law's lawyer has established that no Brazilian record contains her before 2011 and is preparing an action to annul the marriage. The only thing standing in the way of it is a husband who gave her an alibi he knows is false, and who has never once said so, and will not say so now.
