Paris, January. Sol Brandt is thirty-two and sells the business she started in a garden in Los Angeles for eleven dollars, and the decision takes four minutes and is not the most interesting thing that happens that week. She stays on for a two-year earn-out. Between January and September she writes the one section of her dissertation she has never been able to write, which requires her to say why her question matters, and the answer turns out to be a question she wrote and discarded two years ago. In August she recomputes the figure for the third time in six years and finds that she passed it in May.
